Virginia Tech leaders prepare for state budget cuts

BLACKSBURG (WSLS 10) - Virginia Tech leaders are working on a plan to make up for possibly millions of dollars in losses.

Governor Terry McAuliffe has instructed public colleges and universities to prepare for a likely 7.5 percent cut in state funding next year.

Virginia Tech leaders said it is too early to tell exactly what the impact will be, but everything is on the table right now, including possible tuition increases.

"Tuition and fees is one of many options that you can have," said Virginia Tech spokesman Mark Owczarski. "It's not a desirable option by any stretch of the imagination. We'd like to avoid that. But there are so many options, you have to look at them all."

During its Monday meeting, the Board of Visitors voted to add several new degree programs and designate the Virginia Tech-Arlington Center as an extended campus site.
