Fire at Western Virginia Regional Jail causes $500 in damage

ROANOKE COUNTY (WSLS 10) - No one was hurt in a fire that happened at the Western Virginia Regional Jail on Monday evening.

Roanoke County Fire & Rescue crews were called to the 5800 block of West River Road for a reported structure fire at the jail at about 5:15 p.m.

When the first crews arrived, they reported no smoke showing from the building.

Prior to the arrival of fire crews, officers from the jail used fire extinguishers to put out the flames, according to Jennifer Conley Sexton with Roanoke County Fire & Rescure.

Crews confirmed the fire was out and worked to ventilate smoke from the area.

No injuries reported.

The fire was contained to the laundry room and damage estimates are figured at $500.

Fire investigators are working together with officials from the jail to determine the cause of the fire.
