Matt Jaworowski, Media General National Desk – (MEDIA GENERAL) -- Many voters across the country will carefully schedule their day Tuesday to try and hit a lull at the polls and avoid a long line. Just be careful you don't run out of time.
Open polling hours vary by state and, in some cases, by city and county. Most states permit voters who are in line by closing time to cast a ballot, but that provision may vary by jurisdiction.

The first polls will close at 6 p.m. Eastern time in Indiana and Kentucky. Polls in most other states close between 7 and 8 p.m. local time. New York, which will hold open polls from 6 a.m.-9 p.m. local time, has the longest polling hours – 15.
Washington and Oregon do not hold open polling hours. All ballots are sent via mail or delivered to a county elections department by 8 p.m. on Election Day.
According to Ballotpedia, the precincts that will be open the latest will be in western Alaska. Those precincts will be open until 8 p.m. local time (Hawaiian Standard Time) – 2 a.m. Wednesday in the Eastern Time Zone. Polls in Hawaii will close at 6 p.m. local time.
