Powderpuff game leads to female joining football team at Glenvar

ROANOKE COUNTY (WSLS 10) – After struggling this year kicking, Glenvar High School football coaches found their answer midway through the season at the powderpuff game.

Her name in Kelci Horner.

“Our place kicker was actually coaching at the powderpuff game and came to me on Monday and said, ‘Coach she can really kick,’” explained Coach Kevin Clifford.

Horner is a standout on the soccer field. In fact, she plans to play at Emory and Henry next year.

In the meantime, she’s picked up a new sport and it’s one she’s pretty good at.

“I love it because I’m in a new atmosphere and I’m coming from the student section to the field and having a great time, seeing a whole different perspective,” Horner said.

“Obviously she has a strong leg,” Clifford said. “If she couldn’t kick, we wouldn’t have her. It’s not a novelty for me. This isn’t a publicity stunt or anything else, she can put the ball through the uprights and that’s all I care about.”

Clifford says Horner isn’t the first female kicker at Glenvar. Another female student kicked 13 to 14 years ago.
