Family asking judge for delay trial in wrongful death lawsuit

NBC 29 News Staff – CHARLOTTESVILLE (NBC 29) - Attorneys for the family of a former University of Virginia lacrosse player, killed by her boyfriend, are asking a judge to delay the trial in a wrongful death lawsuit.

The family of Yeardley Love is suing George Huguely for $30 million for her 2010 murder.

The family's attorneys wants a Charlottesville judge to push back the start of a civil trial, while they wait for a Maryland judge's decision in a separate case involving whether the Loves can get a payout from the Huguely family's $6 million insurance policy.

Huguely's lawyers say the case has dragged on long enough.

Matthew Green, Huguely Family Attorney said, "We've done a lot of groundwork in this case. We think we have a lot of evidence to put forward at the March 2017 trial date that will provide a fuller truth of what actually happened. And, we're looking forward to a chance to do that."

At a hearing on Wednesday in Charlottesville, the judge said he will decide by the end of the month whether to delay the trial.

Right now, the three-week trial is scheduled to start in March.
