Students in Franklin County embrace politics with mock election

FRANKLIN COUNTY (WSLS10)-- Students at Franklin County High School are heading to the polls today, a week before the national election-- to cast their vote for president.

Seniors in Reyhan Deskin's history class have been working since the beginning of the school year to put together this school-wide mock election. It's giving students of all ages a taste of what the real election will be like and a chance to voice their own opinions.

"I realized, with this being a contentious election, that this would provide a way for us to come together and talk about the issues and do it in a real world way," says Deskins.

He says his students have done all of the work-- from calling local businesses to running the polling location in the high school, he wants them to get a taste of what goes into planning and participating in an election.

"I think it gives us just a little bit of a glimpse into what it could be," says Briggs Parris, a senior in Mr. Deskin's class. "It might be different than the national election, but I think it gives us a pretty good idea."

Just like with the national election-- registering and voting is completely up to the voters themselves. They had to register to vote on their own and will be responsible for going to the voting location, instead of just voting during an assigned class period.
