(WSLS 10) – Roanoke City Parks and Rec holds a Trunk or Treat event today. Many cars, including police cars, will fill the parking lot at the Eureka Park Recreation Center. Kids can dress in their costume and collect candy from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Sentencing is scheduled today for the Halifax County man who plead guilty to capital murder. James Terry is accused of breaking into the home of 84 year-old Charlotte Rice in South Boston in April 2011, sexually assaulting her and then beating her to death. The judge will decide if Terry should get life in prison without parole or the death penalty.

Take the kids to uptown Martinsville tonight for Trick or Treating. Streets will be closed to allow the kids to safely walk from business to business collecting candy from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Kids eat free today at IHOP. Kids under the age of 12 can get Scary Face Pancakes today from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

After a seven month delay, the Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce will unveil a new piece of art today as part of the Virginia is for Lovers’ campaign and the lake’s 50th anniversary. Police say someone stole parts of the LOVE letters from the creator’s driveway in March. The unveiling is at 4 p.m. at the Westlake Towne Center.

The Roanoke Prevention Alliance will announce a new grant today to reduce substance use amount area youth. The Drug Free Community Support Program grant is issued by the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy.

Today is the deadline to apply for Small Business Administration loans. The loans are available to small businesses and nonprofits in Halifax, Henry and Pittsylvania Counties as a result of flooding in July of last year.

The Roanoke County Police Department and office throughout the Commonwealth will participate in a tweet-along tonight. It’s a virtual ride-along where you can follow an officer on patrol. The tweet-along give you a chance to see the types of situations officers face while on patrol. You can follow the police department’s twitter account which is @RoCoPD or the hash tag #TweetsOnPatrol from 5 p.m. to midnight.
