Crews working to restore natural gas to residents in Pittsylvania County

UPDATE (1:20 a.m.) - Columbia Gas of Virginia is working to restore service to customers in Chatham and Tightsqueeze.

The company said nearly 300 customers are currently without natural gas service.

Crews responded to an odor call Saturday night, which required them to shut down the section of the distribution system serving customers in Chatham and Tightsqueeze.

Columbia Gas said residents that were evacuated returned to their homes.

Crews are working overnight to make repairs and restore natural gas service to impacted customers.

To help crews quickly and safely complete the restoration, please note:

  • They need inside access to every affected home or business.
  • An adult must be present to allow our employees to restore service.
  • If you leave your home, please leave your contact information with a neighbor or on your door.
  • Keep your porch light on.
  • Columbia Gas of Virginia's employees and contractors carry photo ID and will be happy to show it on request.

PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY (WSLS 10) - Crews are on the scene containing a gas leak in Pittsylvania County.

Officials from Blairs Fire and Rescue said the leak was reported around 9:45 Saturday night in the 600 block of Davis Road, south of Chatham.

Davis Road is blocked and crews from the Chatham Fire Department, Blairs Fire and Rescue, VDOT, Virginia State Police and the Virginia Department of Emergency Management are on the scene.

Twelve homes have been evacuated as a precaution and no injuries or sickness have been reported so far.

All evacuees are being held at an emergency shelter at the Chatham Fire Department, according to Blairs Fire and Rescue.

Firefighters do not know how long it will take to contain the leak and it is unknown how much gas has leaked or is still leaking.

The cause of the gas leak remains under investigation.
