ROANOKE (WSLS 10) – Friends and family paid their final respects to Daniel Brown on Saturday. The 56 year old was killed when a gunman opened fire at FreightCar America on Tuesday. A memorial service was held Saturday at Oakeys East Chapel on Cloverdale Road.

Vickie Hawkins, Brown’s girlfriend, described him as a kind soul with a good heart. Brown was from New York and moved to Roanoke several years ago. Friends said Brown was a veteran who served during Desert Storm. Hawkins said Brown enjoyed taking part in the Veterans Day Parade with the Blue Ridge Volunteer Fire Department.

“He was a very loving man and the community has really lost a good person,” Hawkins said.

Police are still investigating a motive for Tuesday’s shooting. Three others were injured. Investigators said Getachew Fekede opened fire at the FreightCar America facility in Roanoke early Tuesday before killing himself. Officers said the 53-year-old entered the U.S. from Kenya legally through a refugee immigration program, but was fired by the company in March when he stopped showing up for work.
