ROANOKE (WSLS 10) – There’s been a bite to the air the past several mornings and it’s only going to get colder from here.

Winter is fast approaching and you may be looking at ways to save on bills by weatherizing your house.

You may or may not have known that Saturday is National Weatherization Day.

On its 40th year, Weatherize Roanoke is helping to make sure its residents and their houses are ready to take on the weather.

Whether it’s summer’s heat or winter’s snow, your house takes a beating from Mother Nature, but there are ways to better protect your home and the people inside of it.

“There’s a lot of good reasons. Saving energy and saving money. That’s a very important thing for families of any income level,” said Jeremy Holmes of RIDE Solutions.

Saving money on energy bills may be the first thing that comes to mind when talking about weatherizing a home, but there’s so much more than that.

“It’s also a way to make your house healthier. There’s some things you can do to improve air quality, keep your house safer, there’s a lot of things involved with it and that’s what we’re hoping at this event to educate people on all the ways touches and improves your life,” said Holmes.

On Saturday, the utility and community organizations that make up Weatherize Roanoke will take you through the smallest changes you can do yourself to the bigger ones that may require professional backup.

“There are going to be a lot of displays and things that you can see or look at talking about building science and how this all works and what would happen if somebody came out and did a weatherization to your home plus just community engagement, meeting the partners and having some fun,” said Roanoke City Sustainability and Outreach Coordinator Nell Boyle.

And that fun could lead to a better quality of life as the days continue to get shorter.

“It’s starting to get a little colder. It makes a big difference I had some work done on my house and we noticed right away so we’re pretty excited to get some people thinking about it,” said Boyle.

Those displays and prizes all happen tomorrow on the Wells Fargo Plaza. it runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
