Virginia Tech defeats Pittsburgh, becomes bowl eligible

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (WSLS 10) - The 25th ranked Virginia Tech Hokies won for the first time ever at Heinz Field, 39-36 on Thursday night.

Twenty-one of the Hokies points came thanks to the foot of Joey Slye.

Slye's six field goals tied a school record set by Mickey Thomas against Vanderbilt on November, 4 1989 when Tech won 18-0.

Jerod Evans led the Hokies air attack with 406 passing yards and two touchdowns.

For the Panthers, James Conner ran 19 times for 141 yards and three touchdowns.

With the win, the Hokies improve to 6-2 on the season with a 4-1 conference record. Gaining this sixth win has made the team bowl-eligible.

Next up, the Hokies travel to Duke (3-4, 0-3 ACC) on Saturday, November 5.
