(WSLS 10) – Virginia State Police and community partners will hold a heroin and prescription drug abuse forum tonight. They say that one in 14 youth in the Roanoke Valley have used heroin or prescription drugs. Speakers will talk about increased problem in the region and ways to help those affected. The forum begins at 6:30 p.m. at Salem High School.
Leaders in the Alleghany Highlands will give an update today on VISION 2025. It’s a program to address economic challenges and to move the region forward. It includes five focus areas, including creating a web store to sell local products, community landscaping and gardens, real estate development, curb appeal and a heritage and technology center.
Students at Lynchburg schools will get to take part in the Student Pledge Against Gun Violence. U.S. Attorney John Fishwick brought the national program to schools in Virginia and will speak to students about gun violence, decision making and community safety. Students will then have the chance to take the pledge which says they will not bring a gun to school, settle a problem or dispute with a gun and will influence friends not to use guns to settle disputes.
Candidates for Virginia’s 9th Congressional District will face off in a debate tonight. Republican Morgan Griffith will face off against Democrat Derek Kitts.
