Lynchburg WWII hero's story heading to the big screen

LYNCHBURG (WSLS 10) - A military hero from Lynchburg will have his story told in theaters next month.

"Hacksaw Ridge," a movie directed by Mel Gibson follows the story of Desmond Doss, who served in the U.S. Army during World War II and refused to carry a gun.

Doss saved 75 men and was awarded the Medal of Honor and leaders at a school named after him in Lynchburg said they're glad others will know his story.

"Gratifying to know that someone who stood up for what he believed, even when it wasn't the popular thing to do; that his story, that his story to this very day is very impactful to millions of people," said Billy Wright, the assistant principal at Desmond Doss Christian Academy.

School leaders will have a table setup at the Regal River Ridge Stadium 14 on Friday, November 4, at 5 p.m., when the movie is released.
