Loved ones remember Daniel Brown, victim of FreightCar America shooting

ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - Police continue to investigate Tuesday's deadly shooting at FreightCar America in Roanoke. Officers said 56-year-old Daniel Brown died in the attack. Police also said that Keith Law, Gary Koran and Travis Valderrama are the three men who were injured during the shooting.

Vickie Hawkins said Daniel Brown, her boyfriend, was a kind soul with a good heart.

"How lost everybody is going to be without him" said Brown. "How it's going to break his families heart."

Friends said the 56-year-old veteran fought in Desert Storm. On Tuesday, he was shot and killed after a former employee opened fire at FreightCar America.

Brown's coworker was seeking cover in a nearby bathroom when the shooting happened. He did not want to be identified but described what he heard.

"I wind up standing up and ducking into a corner" the shooting survivor said. "I waited for silence and then I hear one final shot.'

According to police, the gunman killed himself after firing close to 10 rounds, which injured three people and killed Dan.

"I'll never stop seeing Daniel laying there" said the shooting survivor. "I'll never stop seeing the shooter."

Hawkins said Brown adored his grandkids in New York and treated her 5-year-old granddaughter as if she was his own. Loved ones said they'll always remember the good times like the Veterans Day parade when Dan rode with the Blue Ridge Volunteer Fire Department. After Tuesday's tragedy Dan's smiling face will surely be missed.

"He was a very loving man and the community has really lost a good person," Hawkins said.
