"Ceremonial Release of Burdens" helps people heal

ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - When tragic events like the deadly shooting at FreightCar America happen, local agencies like Carilion Clinic, LewisGale and other organizations offer counseling.

On Wednesday, staff at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital held an event to help anyone who may be dealing with a tragedy or negative feelings.

The "Ceremonial Release of Burdens" took place at the healing garden. People were invited to write their burdens on a piece of paper which was place inside the boat-shaped artwork and burned.

Officials said the hospital collects the notes throughout the year and holds the ceremony every couple of months.

Richard Brown, Director of Chaplaincy Services for the Carilion Clinic said the event is just one method people can let go of bad experiences and heal. He said the grieving process is an important step to recovering from a negative incident.

"Just to be able to say that, "I'm fearful of going back, I'm fearful of what may happen. My anxiety is up," said Brown. "I think that the first step is just acknowledging what is going on inside."

Brown also said people should not be afraid to share their feelings with others.
