South Boston Speedway repave nearly complete

SOUTH BOSTON (WSLS 10) - The repaving of South Boston Speedway is almost complete.

On Tuesday, paving wrapped up on pit road and started on the track.

Work has been underway for about a month. It had been 22 years since the last repaving.

Pocono Raceway Chief Operating Officer and South Boston Speedway representative Nick Igdalsky said the old surface had become so worn down that patch jobs were no longer an option.

"Once we got the old surface up, saw some problem areas that we had to fix. Then, we did some additional drainage along the outside of the track as well," Igdalsky explained.

South Boston Speedway and Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Penn. are owned by the same family.

Matt Bowling, who races at the track in NASCAR's Whelen All-American Series, said he is looking forward to racing on the new surface next season.

"I think you'll see more people using the banking up, kind of tending to get off the bottom," Bowling said. "[It's] definitely going to create great racing."

Everything is expected to be finished on Wednesday.
