(WSLS 10) – The Dublin man charged after police say he shot a man in the neck and held him hostage is in court today for a preliminary hearing. It happened in June in the six thousand block of Old Route 11. Deputies say that 37 year old Christopher Draper is charged with abduction and malicious wounding. Investigators say that Draper and the victim, Robert Taylor, knew each other.
A truck driver training program begins today in Galax. Wytheville Community College is holding program at the Crossroads Institute in Galax, looking for people looking for a new career path. The six week course allows students to then seek employment in career with a starting salary averaging $40,000.
Virginia Western Community College continues helping students displaced by the shutdown of ITT Technical Institute. Today it holds a college and career transition assistance event. The event will help students with financial aid and academic records. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
LewisGale Imaging Center Montgomery holds an open house to introduce new medical technology. The center now has a 3D Mammography System, which detects 41 percent more invasive breast cancers and reduces false positives by up to 40 percent.
The Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets hosts a conference today with senior leaders and cadets from the country’s six senior military colleges. The groups will talk about curriculum, military commission programs and more. The conference wraps up tomorrow.
Students across the region will take part in Red Ribbon Week. It raises awareness about drug use and the problems related to drugs facing our community and encourages the community to promote drug-free lifestyles. Students at Cave Spring Middle School are handing out red ribbons this week. Other activities this week include a door decorating contest, daily dress up themes and a light display on the front of the building.

The Class-J 611 Steam Locomotive will travel to Roanoke this morning. It is expected to return this morning sometime between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. after leaving Spencer, North Carolina early this morning. The Virginia Museum of Transportation will open at 7 a.m. to allow people to welcome it home. Breakfast and lunch will be available for purchase.
