Crews working to tear down fire-damaged Roanoke building

ROANOKE (WSLS 10) – Crews are working to tear a building down in Roanoke after a large fire.

Roanoke firefighters say the former city public schools maintenance building, now owned by Carilion, is a total loss.

The fire was reported early Sunday morning as a two alarm fire.

Roanoke Fire EMS say this was the largest fire they have battled since last year.

Carilion’s spokesperson Chris Turnbull says Carilion got the building through a trade with the city about a year and a half ago.

He says Carilion will look at alternatives for the property.

“We’re going to reassess what we’ll do with the building this coming week and over the course of the next few months,” said Turnbull

Fire crews are still investigating the cause of the fire.

Turnbull says the power to the building had been turned off.

No one was hurt in the fire.
