Hundreds partcipate in Drug Take Back Day

ROANOKE (WSLS10) - On Saturday, organizations in the Roanoke Valley teamed up to prevent drugs from ending up in the wrong place. It was part of the annual "Drug Take Back Day".

The Roanoke Area Youth Substance Abuse Coalition and the Western Virginia Regional Water Authority collected expired prescription drugs.

The overall goal is to stop prescription pill abuse and to keep people from flushing unwanted pills down the toilet which causes harm to the drinking water supply.

"At this site, we typically have a good return of drugs here cause it's well worth their time to be here," Carol White, with RAYSAC said.

So far, organizers said they have collected more than 21,000 pounds of prescription medication.
