(WSLS 10) – Hockey returns to Roanoke tonight. The Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs will take to the ice for the first time tonight against the Knoxville Ice Bears. Before the puck drops, the team will hold a pre-party featuring live music from 7 Mile Ford. The festivities begin at 5 p.m. The game starts at 7:05 p.m.

The City of Radford dedicates a sculpture today of Mary Draper Ingles at the Glencoe Museum and Gallery Grounds. Ingles settled in Virginia with her family in the 1730s on land that is now part of the Virginia Tech campus. During the French and Indian War, Ingles was kidnapped and, after a month, escaped and made the trek back home from Ohio. In addition to the sculpture unveiling, there will be exhibits at the museum as well as a reception.

A new photo exhibit opens today in Lynchburg showcasing veterans. Photographer Steve Romine took the photos after taking his father-in-law to Monument Terrace for the weekly Troop Rally. Veterans have gathered every Friday for nearly 15 years to recognize the service of other veterans and those currently serving. The exhibit opens at 2 p.m. today at the Academy Center of the Arts.

Attend a presidential debate from the past today. Actors will play John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, re-enacting a debate from the early days of our nation. They will discuss the Declaration of Independence and Constitution as well as the two party system and term limits in a style our founding fathers intended. The debate begins at 7 p.m. at Roanoke County’s South County Library.

 

Drug Take Back Day events will take place in many cities and towns across Southwest Virginia. It’s a chance for you to safely get rid of any expired, unused or unwanted prescription medications in an effort to prevent drug abuse, accidental overdoses as well as theft and drug related crime. The events take place on Saturday at various places and times.
