Danville Area Humane Society looking for help after seizing 47 cats

DANVILLE (WSLS 10) – The Danville Area Humane Society is asking for help after nearly 50 cats have been seized since October 10th.

The cats come from two neglect cases.

Last week, 16 cats were seized from a home. Fifty cats were living in the home, but 34 could not be caught.

What will be done about those cats will be decided at the custody hearing, which is required to be held within 10 business days of the seizure.

On Monday, 31 cats were taken from another home.

DAHS Executive Director Paulette Dean said the owner had been taking them in for the Pittsylvania County SPCA and Happy Tails in Chatham so the cats would not be euthanized.

Friday, the attorney for the Pittsylvania SPCA said the SPCA is not connected to the case.

“No one wants to euthanize animals, however the fact remains there are too many of them and there truly are worse things on this earth than a humane death,” Dean emphasized.

She said many of the cats have disease because of the deplorable conditions in which they were living in.

“I would think this would probably be in the top five hoarding cases I’ve been on since I’ve been here at the humane society,” said DAHS Assistant Manager Tara Moore when asked how this case compares to other cases she’s experienced.
