Roanoke County Fire and Rescue donates train caboose

ROANOKE COUNTY (WSLS 10) - Roanoke County Fire and Rescue donated a train caboose to the Roanoke chapter of the National Railway Society on Monday.

The caboose, which had been at the training center for decades, was picked up on Monday morning.

It was originally used for firefighter training, but the center had to stop using it because the inside had asbestos.

"It was a great tool at one time there was a lot of cabooses on the train line so we would use it for a number of situations if someone was sick inside out on the railroad, how would you get in, how would you get out?" said Chief Stephen Simon. "So it served a lot of unique challenges for us. We also used it for some firefighter mayday challenges where we go and build rooms inside that were condensed to see if firefighters could get out simulating if they got trapped in a burning building."

The National Railway Society plans to restore the caboose and preserve it for historical purposes.
