Figures show more early voters, increase in registration

ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - Monday is the last day to register to vote in the November election in Virginia. Early numbers show more Virginians are taking part in the process this year.

Election offices across the commonwealth have seen an increase in the number of people registering to vote and in some cases, officials said the high volume caused a backlog in the system.

"The volume is heavier. Our daily volume is probably three or four times heavier than normal," said Andrew Cochran, Roanoke City Board of Elections. "And when you have all the users across the state using the same system it has been sluggish at times, but we are currently caught up in Roanoke city, but we had periods of being behind."

Early voting numbers also show a significant increase, According to online political resource VPAP.

Compared to 2012, Southwest Virginia has seen a 22.96 percent increase in early voting.
