Hundreds pound the pavement in Salem's first half marathon

SALEM, VA (WSLS 10) -  Hundreds took to the streets of Salem Saturday for the LewisGale half marathon event.

This was the first year for the 8K and half marathon. City leaders say the 13.1 mile course included three-miles uphill.

"We wanted to bring some other non-traditional type sports into Salem to be able to showcase what Salem has to offer," said Salem Parks and Recreation's Joe Shaner. "What better way to do that then to run through your community?"

About 600 people from approximately 20 different countries registered to run.

"It is very exciting," said runner Kathy Campbell.  "I have friends that grew up in the area, so I am excited to be here and share this opportunity with them."
