(MEDIA GENERAL) – The NHL season is in its first week and we already have a frontrunner for the most bizarre play of the year.

Detroit Red Wings defenseman Danny DeKeyser scored a goal late in Thursday's 6-4 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning that still has goaltender Ben Bishop scratching his head and physicists scrambling for their calculators.

Trailing 5-3, the Red Wings won a neutral-zone faceoff back to DeKeyser at center ice. He rips the puck off the glass as his teammates enter the offensive zone to try and establish possession.

Here's where physics comes in.

The puck, at just the right angle, hits a stanchion that holds the rink's Plexiglass in place, and heads toward the net. Bishop, in position tight to the goalpost specifically to protect against weird bounces or an attack from behind the net, is startled by the quick carom. The puck clears a small gap between Bishop and the side of the net, bounces off the back of his left leg and into the net.

To quote the Red Wings broadcast announcer Ken Daniels, "You won't see them any stranger than that."
