What’s News Today: October 12, 2016


(WSLS 10) – Operators of the Gathright Dam will perform a pulse release today. Water levels will increase on the Jackson River between three and four and a half feet between 6 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Operators caution people who use the river to use extra caution as water levels rise.

Republican vice-presidential nominee Mike Pence will speak today at Liberty University’s convocation. Liberty President Jerry Fallwell Jr. was an early supporter of Donald Trump and is a member of his Evangelical Advisory Board. This is Pence’s second stop in southwest Virginia. He spoke in Roanoke in July.

Roanoke College hosts a forum on natural gap pipelines today. Several experts will speak on the economic costs of pipelines on property value and economic development, and impacts on scenic views. Roanoke College students will also show some of their research about the Mountain Valley Pipeline.

Virginia Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry, Basil Gooden, will travel to Grayson County today. He will join county leaders to make a jobs announcement this afternoon.

The Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs begin training camp today. The team announced in October of last year that it was bringing hockey back to the Star City. The Rail Yard Dawgs are part of the Southern Professional Hockey League. The team’s home opener is on October 21st.

Small businesses will get a jump on the holiday season today. Economic Development Departments in the region will hold a seminar to help retailers with holiday sales strategies. Christmas is now 74 days away.

Opera Roanoke presents the Broadway blockbuster “South Pacific” tonight in Blacksburg. Tickets can be bought online or at the Moss Arts Center box office. The show begins tonight at 7:30 p.m.

Lynchburg City Schools holds a forum on advancing educational opportunities among African-American students. School leaders will talk about programs which address ways students can succeed in advance opportunities offered by the school. They will also listen to your thoughts and concerns. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. at Dunbar Middle.
