VDOT estimates $2 million in damage from Hurricane Matthew

SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — VDOT Hampton Roads estimates damage to state-maintained roads from Hurricane Matthew, along with debris clean up costs, will top $2 million.

Southampton County was hardest hit, with more than $1 million in damaged roads. In the Franklin sector alone, 44 roads were washed out.

Nine roads will require major repairs, including Route 58 in Southampton County, where a large sink hole formed. VDOT says they can’t determine the extent of the damage to Route 58 until the Blackwater River recedes. Then, crews will be able to assess whether the road washed out or a culvert failed.

VDOT hopes to make an initial assessment of the road on Friday. Temporary repairs have been made. Part of the road is still closed to traffic.

VDOT-maintained roads in Isle of Wight County took a $300,000 beating.

Meanwhile, crews are still cleaning up downed trees and debris along several major interstates.

District Administrator Jim Utterback said, “VDOT crews are working 12-hour shifts to clear and repair roadways. Washouts of varying degrees and tree debris was widely scattered across the district.”

VDOT says initial damage assessments could climb.
