36-year-old Amherst woman dies in crash, three children hospitalized

AMHERST COUNTY (WSLS 10) - A 36-year-old Amherst woman died on Tuesday morning after a two-vehicle crash on Route 151 near Turkey Mountain Road, according to state police.

At about 7:30 a.m., a 2004 Honda Civic was pulling forward from a private driveway onto Route 151 when it failed to yield to a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee traveling north on Route 151. The Grand Cherokee was unable to brake in time to avoid striking the Honda and state police say the two vehicles collided and came to rest in the southbound lanes of Route 151.

The driver of the Honda, Maria Magdalena Anavia-Roman, died at the scene.

Her three children were passengers in the Honda at the time of the crash. A 6-year-old, 12-year-old and 14-year-old were all transported to Lynchburg General Hospital. One of the children was then flown to UVA Medical Center in Charlottesville for treatment of life-threatening injuries.

The woman driving the Grand Cherokee and her child passenger suffered minor injuries in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
