Flooding could last for weeks in the Carolinas

NBC News – (NBC News) Thousands of people are still stranded in North Carolina flood waters left behind by Hurricane Matthew.

The storm, which left a path of destruction from the Caribbean to the Carolinas, is responsible for killing at least 33 people in United States and hundreds more overseas.

North Carolina shelters are full, with many wondering when they can return home.

Many roads are impassable, and two main rivers aren't expected to crest until later this week.

Governor Pat McCrory is urging people head the warnings.

"If we say the water is coming, and say do not drive through that water, we mean it," McCrory said Tuesday.

There's still no clear estimate of how many people are missing.
