New River Valley police helping Hurricane Matthew victims

CHRISTIANSBURG (WSLS 10) - New River Valley law enforcement helped those most devastated by Hurricane Matthew.

Officers from the Christiansburg Police Department and the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office arrived in Conway, S.C., on Monday morning with 300 bottles of water, hundreds of pounds of food and almost $2,000 in cash. The officers collected these donations in Christiansburg over the weekend.

They said more than 150 Myrtle Beach businesses are destroyed, and 80 percent of that county remains without power. Initial damage estimates are around $7.9 million.

Officers are helping to feed around 15,000 people who are needing meals each day. They plan to return to Christiansburg late Monday or Tuesday.
