Danville Fire Department using fire trailer to help emphasize fire safety

DANVILLE (WSLS 10) - The Danville Fire Department is using its fire trailer this week to teach kids and teens about fire safety as part of National Fire Prevention Week.

The trailer has the ability to simulate what it would be like to try to get out of a house that's on fire.

It also has a fireplace, a fire alarm and a working kitchen to help demonstrate safe cooking techniques.

"It gives them an opportunity to see how much they can see and what they cannot see. It teaches them to stay low and to crawl. As we know, heat and smoke rises so we want to get underneath it," Danville Fire Department Battalion Chief Shelby Irving explained.

The fire department plans to speak at every Danville elementary school this week.
