ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - This Friday, Angels of Assisi is planning to make another trip to South Carolina to help displaced shelter animals.

The center, which is already sitting past maximum capacity, plans to take in 28 dogs and cats and set up portable crates to make room.

On Thursday, the shelter took in 13 dogs and 10 cats from South Carolina to help shelters there make room for animals displaced from Hurricane Matthew.

"[The shelters] are either flooded themselves or inundated with pets from people that have been displaced," said the center's adoption director Matthew Brown. "A lot of the times, [the shelters] have to make the tough decisions if they will have to euthanize for space. So, if we can help alleviate some of that and move some of the pets further north, we're going to do that."

Brown said most of the animals are healthy and some have already found their forever homes.

The center is also awaiting a new transport trailer that can carry double the amount of animals compared to its current truck. A $125,000 grant from Petco is purchasing the new truck and Angels of Assisi should have it within the next week.
