Volunteers are collecting non-perishables, bottles of water, cleaning supplies as well as pet food to send to those affected.

Lt. Doug Weddle of the Christiansburg Police Department is heading up the effort. He says the department wanted to do anything they could to help.

"Some of those folks potentially could lose everything they own, especially with a lot of the flooding that is expected later today," Lt. Weddle said. "So it's just a plan that we came up with locally to collect donations and help those who need it the most right now."

A hurricane relief trailer is set up in front of Wal-Mart.

Officers will be collecting donations Saturday and Sunday at the Christiansburg Wal-Mart from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
