Virginia's First Lady visits Averett to discuss importance of service learning

DANVILLE (WSLS 10) - Virginia's first lady is encouraging university leaders from across the state to increase community involvement.

Dorothy McAuliffe visited Averett University on Friday to speak at the annual Governor's Summit on Enhancing Engagement in the Commonwealth.

She talked about expanding service year opportunities, where colleges and universities offer incentives to students who apply what they're learning in the classroom to do community service.

She also discussed the benefits of being part of the state's Compact on National Service.

"This is our third statewide summit, our higher ed administrators, who are committed to the idea that We want to do more to promote national years of service for our young people and finding more opportunities for them to serve. We know this generation of young people is committed to community service," McAuliffe said.

The first lady also swore in the new members of the Dan River Year Americorps.
