ROANOKE (WSLS 10) – The Interstate 581 Valley View interchange remains closed, even though it was expected to open to traffic earlier this year.
The Virginia Department of Transportation said the new on and off exit ramps in the diverging diamond will open before Thanksgiving.
Right now, crews are working to correct uneven paving on the ramps, add traffic signals and install sound walls.
“The subcontractor that the prime contractor hired to install the sound barriers actually went bankrupt,” commented Jason Bond, a spokesperson for VDOT. “It has caused us some delays on completing the sound wall installation on the project, which has delayed the opening of the interchange.”
VDOT says the project is expected to cost nearly $64 million.
