What’s News Today: October 6, 2016

(WSLS 10) – The Salvation Army of Lynchburg will hold a supply drive today, collect items for those in the path of Hurricane Matthew. The group will collect items like water, paper products, canned food and cleaning supplies. A drop off site will be set up today from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Sam’s Club on Wards Road.

A “major announcement” will be made today at Liberty University by Virginia Amateur Sports, the organizers of the Virginia Commonwealth Games. Representatives from the City of Lynchburg, Liberty University and other local colleges will also be present.

The Roanoke Regional Chamber holds its Small Business Awards dinner today. Ninety small business advocates and small businesses will be recognized. More than 500 people are expected to attend.

Lynchburg City Schools will hold a dedication ceremony today for the new Heritage High School building. The 266,000 square foot, $63.4 million facility opened for the first time in August. The dedication begins at 6:30 in the school’s auditorium.

Governor Terry McAuliffe will hold the second annual Latino Summit today. The summit gives members of the administration the chance to share information and resources with Hispanic community leaders. Latinos make up nearly nine percent of Virginia’s population and own 4.5 percent of businesses in the Commonwealth.

Hundreds of people from around the world will meet in Roanoke starting today for the Cityworks Xpo. Experts will talk about innovative ways that can help improve communities. The expo lasts through Saturday.
