Appomattox County releases findings from euthanasia investigation

APPOMATTOX COUNTY (WSLS 10) – Appomattox County has released more information regarding its investigation that followed the euthanasia of a bird-dog mix named Sam on September 16.

Volunteers said a woman was waiting to adopt the dog from the Appomattox County Animal Shelter.

Sam had been in the county’s shelter for seven months, according to the report. In addition, the staff said his social skills were diminishing.

The investigation revealed the potential adopter was contacted by an animal welfare action group volunteer about Sam on September 6. After the potential adopter expressed interest, the volunteer then sent the shelter manager a text message that the woman may come by to see Sam.

The report states that was the extent of their communication about the dog. In addition there was never any direct communication between the potential adopter and the shelter.
