ROANOKE (WSLS) - We are less than two months away from Thanksgiving and people are preparing for the 2016 Union Drumstick Dash. Thousands of people take part in the annual 5k race held on Thanksgiving Day in downtown Roanoke.

WSLS 10 is a proud sponsor of the event. The race helps make a difference for the Roanoke Rescue Mission and families who benefit from its services. This year WSLS 10 is teaming up with Fleet Feet to help walkers and runners get ready for the 3.1 mile race. Starting in October, WSLS 10 on-air personalities will join Saturday morning groups training for the event. The goal is to provided training tips to people who want to take part in the races, possibly for the first time.

You can find information about the race and the Fleet Feet running programs here. The training programs are for adults of all fitness level. You can try one session for free to see if you'd like to join.

Money raised during the Dash pays for the mission's year-long kitchen budget. The Drumstick Dash is one of the largest races in our area. For some it is a family tradition while others are just glad to give back to the community.
