LYNCHBURG (WSLS 10) - Some neighbors at the Hillcrest apartment complex in Lynchburg are on edge as police continue to investigate a deadly shooting.
It happened along Birchwood Drive at about 6:47 a.m. on Thursday.
Lynchburg police say one woman is dead and neighbors are concerned. Nearly two-dozen people gathered behind the police rope waiting to learn more information on Thursday.
Allen Paine, who lives in the apartment complex, said it was the sound of sirens that woke him up. "There were lights everywhere, police cars, adults and the street was blocked off down there," explained Paine, who's lived in the Hillcrest Apartments for 17 years and has never seen anything like this.
The Lynchburg Police Crime Scene Unit worked until noon collecting additional information from inside the taped off area.
Police are still withholding the identity of the woman at this time.
Now, Paine and other residents are looking to police for answers.
"I kind of like to know what's going on so you can be prepared for it," said Paine. "Is the person who did the shooting still there or loose?"
The investigation is ongoing.
