ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - If you haven't registered to vote in this election do so now because Tuesday is National Voter Registration Day.
The day was created four years ago after 6 million Americans didn't vote for the 2008 election because they either missed the deadline or did not know how to register.
Thousands of volunteers, organizations and businesses across the country are joining in to encourage Americans to register to vote at their current address in time for the November 8 election.
It's something a Roanoke County General Registrar Judy Stokes said is extremely important.
"In order to go online they do need to have a signature on file at the DMV. Either a VA driver's license or VA DMV ID. If they don't have a signature with the DMV they can come into our office and register to vote, they can pick up an application at area post officers, libraries," explained Stokes.
Stokes said says you can also download the application online and mail it into your local registrar office.
The deadline to register to vote in Virginia is October 17.
