Police: Man arrested after abducting woman, stealing car, hitting fence and ramming sheriff's vehicle in Wythe County

WYTHE COUNTY (WSLS 10) - Virginia State Troopers have charged a man with multiple felonies after he was allegedly involved in two hit-and-run incidents, as well as abducting a woman.

Shortly after 8:30 a.m. on Monday, police say a 2010 Honda Odyssey ran off the road at Route 52 and Rose Hill Road in Wythe County and minivan crashed through a fence and almost struck a house on the property.

The Honda then fled the scene and got onto Interstate 81 at Exit 70, according to police

Twenty-five minutes later, police say that as the minivan was going south on Interstate 81 in Wythe County, it rammed a Newport News Sheriff's Office vehicle that was also traveling south on I-81.

The impact of the crash caused the sheriff's vehicle to spin off the right side of the interstate and strike the guardrail. The sheriff's vehicle came to rest in the right shoulder facing the southbound traffic. Neither of the two deputies inside the vehicle was injured in the crash. Meanwhile, the Honda drove away and continued south on I-81.

State Trooper C.A. Thompson issued a "Be on the Lookout" broadcast to all regional law enforcement for the Honda.

A Smyth County Deputy Sheriff assisting with the search spotted the minivan at a "park and ride" lot off Exit 80.

The driver, Roy T. Crutchfield, 40, of Walterboro, S.C., was detained along with a 35-year-old female passenger. As a Wythe County Sheriff's Deputy was assisting with the transport of the suspect driver, Crutchfield assaulted the deputy.

Finally detained, Crutchfield was transported to the New River Regional Valley in Dublin, Va.

Further investigation revealed the female passenger was an acquaintance of Crutchfield's and was abducted by him Sunday night. The female passenger was not injured in the crashes.

It was also determined that Crutchfield had stolen the Honda Odyssey.

State Trooper Thompson has charged Crutchfield with one felony count of abduction, two felony counts of attempted capital murder, two felony counts of attempted manslaughter, one felony count of hit-and-run, one felony count of unauthorized use of a vehicle, one felony count of destruction of property, one misdemeanor count of hit-and-run, and one misdemeanor count of possession of marijuana.

The incident remains under investigation.
