HENRY COUNTY (WSLS 10) -Â Inside the Patrick Henry Community College gym on Monday morning, some of the college's baseball players took time to practice with players from the Franklin County Challengers.
The two teams will square off on Tuesday, October 4.
"This means the world to me and all of my parents. This is a big thing for our kids," said Challengers team president Tonya Jackson.
The team is made up of about 40 kids who have mental or physical needs.
All of the proceeds from the game will be given to the team.
"They want to go out and play and we're able to provide that for them. It's also an opportunity for our guys to spread some awareness," said PHCC head baseball coach Frank Jagoda.
Some of the money raised will help the Challengers pay to go to the annual tournament in Virginia Beach in May and play other teams like them from around the country.
They couldn't go this year because the team didn't have enough money.
That was heartbreaking for the parents, but it's heart-warming for the players to know they are going to help the team hopefully avoid this predicament next year.
"I really appreciate the opportunity. I will do my best for them," said outfielder Henry Duvall.
"To be able to give back is nothing compared to the opportunities we can get, so any opportunity to give back we need to take advantage of that," pitcher Parker Brann emphasized.
"I think the biggest [reward] for me is just seeing the smile on their faces," said outfielder and pitcher Cody Powers.
The game starts at 7:30 p.m. at Hooker Field in Martinsville and tickets are $5 at the gate.
The team has also set up a GoFundMe account to help raise money.
