State police charge Pittsylvania County man in felony hit and run

PITTSYVANIA COUNTY (WSLS 10) - Virginia State Police have arrested the driver it says is responsible for the fatal hit-and-run crash in Pittsylvania County, which occurred on August 27.

Courtney Wendall Davis, 32, was taken into custody by state troopers earlier this week for felony hit-and-run, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, and fourth offense for driving on a suspended license.

The state police say the information they received from the public was essential.

The fatal hit-and-run happened on Saturday August 27 at 6:41 p.m. in the 5200 block of Straightstone Road, in the Long Island community of Pittsylvania County.

A 2002 Oldsmobile Alero was traveling southbound on Straightstone Road when it hit a man walking along the left side of the road. The driver of the Oldsmobile Alero, Davis, abandoned the vehicle at the scene and ran away.

The Pittsylvania County Sheriff's Office responded to assist with the search, along with the Virginia State Police Aviation Unit.

The wan who was hit, Paul A. Bell, 41, of Gladys, was transported to Gretna Medical Center where he was declared deceased.
