Deputies looking for car thief after chase in Carroll County

CARROLL COUNTY (WSLS 10) - Deputies in Carroll County were involved in a chase with a car thief Wednesday night.

The Carroll County Sheriff received a report of a possible stolen car on Photo Lane, just off of Mt. Zion near Galax at about 9:08 p.m.

Deputies responded to the scene and found a car matching the description of a gray Pontiac car, reported stolen out of Galax.

As deputies proceeded down Photo Lane, a one lane dirt road, the driver of the car accelerated at a high rate of speed, missing one deputy car, but hitting another head-on.

After hitting the deputy's car, the the driver damaged a wooden porch on a home and then sped the down the road almost hitting another deputy car, head-on.

Cpl. Greer, who was driving the damaged deputy car,  was able to get out of his car and shoot into the stolen car.

The suspect was able to continue onto Mt. Zion Road, heading toward Mill Hill Road, and ran down a driveway, behind a home, through a field and traveled some distance off the road.

Deputies pursued on foot but were unable to locate the suspect in the heavy undergrowth and thick woods.

K-9 teams were called in from the Carroll County Sheriff's Office, Galax Police Dept, Grayson County Sheriff's Office and the Virginia State Police.    A State Police helicopter was brought in, but was unsuccessful in its search because of fog.

Cpl. Greer was transported to Twin County Regional Hospital where he was examined, treated and released.

The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation was contacted to conduct an investigation into the shooting as is Sheriff's Office policy.
