A tractor-trailer and a car carrying two passengers were traveling north on Interstate 81. The driver of the tractor-trailer changed lanes and hit the car.

The impact caused it to spin out of control, run off the left side of the road and hit the guard rail. Police say the car then spun around back into the northbound lanes and ran off the right side of I-81, where it finally came to rest against the guard rail.

The passenger of the car, Hazel I. Mumpower, 79, of Alexandria, was transported to a nearby hospital where she later died. Police say she was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle as it spun across the interstate.

The driver of the car , Cecil Goodman, 80, of Manassas, and a second passenger, a 74-year-old woman, were also transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of serious injuries. Both were wearing a seatbelt.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, Alan Jordan, of Brookhaven, Pennsylvania, was not injured in the crash and was wearing a seat belt.

He was charged with making an improper lane change. The crash remains under investigation.
