(WSLS 10) - The Virginia Velocity Tour comes to Roanoke today. It's a competition by several local businesses, trying to get $25,000 from the Commonwealth to start up businesses in the biotechnology, health, energy, agriculture and security sectors. Five companies in the region are in the running for the prize.

The Appomattox County Board of Supervisors holds an appreciation ceremony today. They will recognize those worked to help the county after the February 24th tornado. The ceremony begins at 4:30 p.m.

Roanoke will celebrate Peace Week today through the end of the week. It's in celebration of the International Day of Peace which is Wednesday. Today, there is a "Walk of Intention" at the Martin Luther King Statue in Roanoke.

Botetourt County holds an open house today, talking about the Gateway Crossing project. It's the area around the new Interstate 81 Exit 150 interchange. Plans for the district call for new housing, shops, offices and hotels. The open house runs from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Greenfield Education Center.

The Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police kicks off its annual conference today in Roanoke. Police Chiefs from all over the state will attend information sessions. The conference runs through Wednesday.

Colleges and universities in Danville will take part in the Week to Engage. It's a chance for students, faculty and staff to partner with community groups and volunteer. Last year, nearly 600 people worked 840 hours in the community.
