Montgomery County considering mosquito control ordinance

CHRISTIANSBURG (WSLS 10) - Montgomery County is considering a new ordinance designed to crack down on potential mosquito breeding grounds.

The county's board of supervisors will vote Monday on the law, which would require citizens to get rid of problem areas on their properties.

Health leaders said mosquitoes that carry the Zika virus only breed in man-made containers with typically two inches of stagnant water or less. They said property owners should change out any standing water in their yards at least once a week.

"We're just asking them to take it upon themselves to abate them," said Montgomery County emergency management coordinator Neal Turner.

Pulaski and Giles counties are also considering similar mosquito control ordinances. Many other localities along Virginia's coast have already adopted them.
