GTO graduate honored in NYC with Dan Piper award

ROANOKE (WSLS 10) -  A Roanoke man will be seen by thousands of people in one of the biggest cities in the nation.

Tyler Caldwell will be featured on a jumbotron in times square between 10 am and 4 pm Saturday.

Tyler, a former GTO cadet is being recognized nationally for raising awareness and promoting understanding of people with down syndrome.

The Dan Piper award is given by the national down syndrome society to people who break down barriers in their communities.

Kathy Caldwell, Tyler's Mom says she couldn't be prouder of her son.

"People who see him have this preconceived idea about people with down syndrome and he makes them more comfortable," Kathy said.

More than a year after graduating, Tyler still wears his growth through opportunity uniform.

He answered the call of service in the Roanoke City police department's first class of cadets.
