Confederate veterans monument dedicated in Campbell County

RUSTBURG (WSLS 10) - Campbell County has now joined every other county in the Commonwealth by having a memorial for Confederate soldiers. Saturday afternoon, the new monument was officially dedicated.

The pillar with three stones around it represents families of confederate veterans, people who helped pay for the monument and the family that donated the land.

The Campbell County Sons of Confederate Veterans was the driving force behind getting the monument erected.

President Reggie Bennett says this has really been in the works since 1905 when a group of local Confederate soldiers met to discuss building a monument.

"One hundred and eleven years later after those original soldiers met at the courthouse in Campbell County, we, the Sons of Confederate Veterans, are erecting a monument in their honor," Bennett said as he spoke to the crowd gathered for the ceremony.

The group is now raising money to pay for future maintenance and for a concrete walkway.
