UNC football player facing charges after being accused of rape

CHAPEL HILL, NC (WSLS 10) - A University of North Carolina football player faces misdemeanor charges and is suspended from the team after a rape allegation.

19-year-old Delaney Robinson said the university did not properly handle the case she made against 21-year-old junior linebacker Allen Artis.

Robinson says it happened inside an on-campus apartment on Valentine's Day. After the incident she says she went to the hospital and reported it to campus police but charges were not filed.

That's when she decided to take action, requesting self-sworn warrants for misdemeanor assault and misdemeanor sexual battery.

Robinson said, "I was drinking that night on Valentine's Day. I'm under age, and I take responsibility for that. But that doesn't give anyone the right to violate me. I did not deserve to be raped. This man raped me and the police told him not to sweat it."

The sophomore student says she came forward to not only address the delays in her case but to also promote change for how sexual assault and rape victims are treated.

In a statement, the university said they aware of the allegations, but "under federal privacy law we are prohibited from responding to those allegations. The university of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is deeply committed to the safety and well-being of our students and takes all allegations about sexual violence or sexual misconduct extremely seriously.
